The Ultimate PC Chair

Anyone who spends much time face to face with a PC every day has a secret dream of "the Chair", with a capital C. The dream is of a chair that fits them perfectly, in fact is handmade for them, and is tailored to their body shape. The chair will help them to be able to concentrate on what they're doing for longer because it will reduce the neck aches and back pains that normally accompany long stretches in front of the PC. Until, fairly recently these were only dreams, even if they were exceptionally fervent. Then there was the advent of publicly available ergonomic chairs.

These types of chairs have provided relief for a huge number of people who spend a large portion of each day sitting in front of a computer. Ergonomic chairs do in fact help a person to concentrate on what they're doing at their computer for a longer period since there are less aches and pains to distract them. The single biggest problem is selecting the best ergonomic chair for you since people with different body types will have different requirements and needs. However, even if the chair isn't hand build to exact specifications, an ergonomic chair will always be better for your body than a regular chair.

The more time you spend in front of your PC in an uncomfortable chair, the more you will feel the difference if you exchange it for an ergonomic chair. The greater the time you spend in front of a PC every day, the greater the need is to have a tailor made chair that will take the strain off the areas of your body that typically take strain during long stretches at the PC. The problem for most people is they don't realise that these chairs exist and therefore that they have to make do with their current chair. While the construction of ergonomic chairs is far below the construction of normal chairs it is still fairly easy to find them if you know where to look.

The manufacture of customised ergonomic chairs is similar to the manufacture of other customised items in that it is normally more expensive than a typical item, but you are guaranteed to get exactly what you need. For a person over six foot with back problems, there is a need to ensure that the ergonomic chair they get has a back that reaches up past shoulder level. For a person with neck problem, a head rest is particularly important so that support is given to the area in pain in order to ensure the pain is not exacerbated. For someone who is developing, or has developed, carpal tunnel syndrome, the arm rests are the right height and position to support the arm instead of putting additional pressure on the wrist.

Researching Your Family - Make a Cozy Den Filled With Necessities

You are a lucky duck if you have a whole room to use for genealogy in your home. If not, partition off a corner where you can put a comfy chair, a workable desk, a filing cabinet, a computer, all-in-one printer and extra storage space and a table. Good genealogy takes a lot of time and work and space and money. You can get by without spending a lot of money as I will show you here and in other articles.

You may be amazed at how much paper you can produce while doing genealogy. You want to save every piece of it and it should be filed in a filing cabinet right off the bat. Get a large enough cabinet right away, too. I got mine at garage sales. You can do good genealogy without using a computer but it sure makes it easier. If you do not want to use a computer ask a good friend who has one to help, preferably a genealogist as the rest of the world thinks we are a nutty bunch.

Computers have come down in price until they are affordable for most people and laptops and net books lead desktops in sales. People have their favorites, but I have been very happy with a Tiger desktop and now a HP laptop. Laptops are nice to carry along to libraries, archives and the other public buildings you will use to get your family documents.

An all-on-one printer has a scanner and a fax along with the printer. You want a scanner to put your pictures into your family tree. A fax will be handy when sending documents back and forth among family members. There is not a lot of difference between printers. It depends on how much you will use each part of one. Here though, a few extra bucks may save a lot of hair pulling. I have a wireless HP that I love.

Stock up on good quality acid-free paper. Never use cheap paper in a printer. It will mess it up and as the good stuff does not cost much more than the poor stuff, it is not worth it. Use good quality ink and pens, too. Buy folders and put the documents, notes and pictures for each family in one. Some people use different colors for each family. Stores have wonderful before school sales on paper, folders, and the like.

Form good habits early on in your research for your family ancestors. Start filing and keep at it on a schedule. One thing I wish I had done when I started over 35 years ago, was to have a large legal pad or such and wrote down every move I made each day when researching. That way you do not repeat the same searches and you have an idea what you have done and what you have to do. Make your work space as comfortable as you can and it will help on your family search.

Symptoms of Tendonitis

Most people have probably heard the term "tendonitis", but what is it and what are the symptoms of tendonitis? Tendonitis can occur at various locations in the body, including elbow tendonitis, wrist tendonitis, shoulder tendonitis, and in other joints such as the knee or ankle. Tendons are thick cords that connect muscles to bones. The tendons naturally stretch and contract with use. Tendons can become injured suddenly or gradually. A sudden stretch that pulls too hard on the tendon can cause tendonitis, as can repetitive motions that stress the tendon by over-working it. When tendonitis is caused by repetitive motions, it usually develops over a long period of time. It can take months or years of repetitive movement to cause tendonitis. If the stressed tendon tears and heals, scar tissue can form and this may cause chronic tendonitis, with chronic inflammation and pain.

How does tendonitis affect computer users?
Computer users most commonly develop tendonitis in the wrist or hand. When tendonitis is not treated and the symptoms become worse, it can develop into carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve leading from the forearm to the hand becomes compressed and it is being irritated by the structures surrounding it.

What causes tendonitis?
Tendonitis causes are usually easy to establish. When repeated movements put strain on the tendon, the tendon becomes inflamed and painful. The pain can be apparent during the actual movement (typing), or at other times such as during periods of rest. The sensation can also feel like "grinding" or "burning." Because the tendon is inflamed, the site of the tendonitis can be tender to the touch. The symptoms of tendonitis can be apparent with other movements that utilize the same tendon that has been injured. For example, a person who has tendonitis of the wrist caused by repetitive keyboard use may also feel the same pain when setting the table for dinner or writing out something by hand with a pen and paper.

How is tendonitis treated?
Initially tendonitis is treated with ice packs, anti-inflammatory medication, and splinting or bracing of the affected area. Adjusting your work space to decrease pressure put on the back, arms, wrists, neck, and hands can be addressed through exploring the ergonomic aspects of your chair height, use of arm supports, keyboard and mouse characteristics, and positioning of the computer monitor. To avoid tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, make sure that the computer keyboard and height of your chair are adjusted so that when you are typing, your forearms and hands are at the same height and the wrists are not bent forward or backward. While typing, the wrists should be floating above the keyboard. Use a wrist rest to adjust the angle of the wrists if needed.

How can I avoid tendonitis?
Prevention is the best measure to take against tendonitis. If you do feel that you may be developing tendonitis, see an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible. It is best to get recommendations for the type of splint or brace to use rather than taking a guess and trying to figure out what will help alleviate your symptoms. As well, self-prescribing over the counter pain medication is not a good idea. Get a recommendation from a doctor, especially if you already take prescription medications. Physical therapy may also be recommended. Physical therapy helps to strengthen muscles so that joints and tendons are better supported. Getting proper tendonitis treatment could make the difference between developing carpal tunnel syndrome or not. Anyone who works on a computer daily should be aware of the symptoms of tendonitis and how to prevent it from getting worse if it does happen.

Aeron Chair by Herman Miller

Ergonomics, the study of fitting the environment to satisfy the human form is not an entirely new concept. But with the introduction of the Aeron computer chair, the art of ergonomic office chair design has come to the forefront by creating a seating comfort zone fashioned for ease of use and luxury. While the days of the usual task chair options still lurk within the walls of most office supply stores, the Aeron chair, with its high style design and personal comfort options challenge even the most opulent ergonomic office chair selections on the market today.

With three styles to choose from, the ergonomically designed Aeron chair offers the user the options of personal comfort adjustment where other office seating offers little or none at all. Challenging the cold office concept, the Aeron office chair affords the user a posture support not found in general office chairs. Those who indulge in the comfort of an Aeron while working will enjoy a comfortable seated position that will soothe the legs as well as ease the lower back by providing both lumbar and sacral support. A clear rarity in current office furniture concepts, the Aeron desk chair stands out in ergonomic office chair design.

Although not exceptionally far apart in well-appointed design, the basic Aeron chair and its companion model, the highly adjustable Aeron, both share the same sleek and luxurious level. Both models offer users the benefits of pneumatic lift, Kinemat - Knee tilt mechanisms for effortless movement of the knees, ankles and the hips, tilt tension adjustment for ensuring proper stability when leaning back and comfortable arm rests.

But the highly adjustable model does offer a little more. Along with the standard features of the basic Aeron chair, the highly adjustable Aeron chair tenders a bit more by offering fully adjustable arms rests, choices of either the posture fit option which fills in any gaps between the user's back and the chair while seated, or the lumbar support option which is fully adjustable to support the often troublesome lower back.

The highly adjustable Aeron ergonomic chair boasts a forward tilt feature which adjusts the seat a full five degrees for proper reach while working as well as a tilt limiter which controls the extension of forward or backward tilt. Both ergonomic chair options, the Aeron desk chair basic and the highly adjustable Aeron chair, present style, luxury and comfort seating on a higher level.
